"Gordon Rule"State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.030 (the Gordon Rule) applies to students entering college for the first time in or following the Spring Term of the 1982-83 college year. It stipulates requirements of student performance in the communications and mathematics areas. Satisfactory completion of this rule requires that students earn a grade of "C" or better in each applicable course.Within the communications area, the student is required to write a total of 24,005 words in English, Humanities, Natural Science, Physical Science, and Social Sciences. Within the mathematics area, completion of specific courses is required.* The intent of the Gordon
Rule will be fulfilled at HCC in the area of communications by the following
distribution of writing requirements:
This sequence of nine courses guarantees that 27 credit hours within the curriculum are writing courses. Students in these courses must complete the prescribed writing. Students transferring credits for these 27 credit hours from other institutions may have to complete additional writing requirements.* Within the mathematics area, students must complete six credit hours of mathematics. Pre-requisite courses must be completed, or appropriate test scores attained, before enrolling in mathematics courses.* Compliance with the Gordon Rule is a separate process from compliance with the CLAST requirements. Some course substitutions do NOT contain the essential skills components as measured on the CLAST exam. Suggestions for these programs: Liberal Arts (6 credits); Science Oriented Program (6 credits); Business Program (6 credits).* * See the 98/99 Catalog (page 66) for more information. The “Gordon Rule” established by the State Board of Education, requires all students in this course be given an assignment to write at least 1715 words to demonstrate their ability to effectively communicate in writing. The related assignments are required to receive any grade higher than a “D” in the course regardless of test scores. |
